The marketing engineer
glossary.

The vocabulary of the role, defined in plain language. No jargon left undefined, no definition that needs another tab.

The role

Marketing engineer

A marketing engineer is a generalist marketer who directs AI and tooling instead of doing every task by hand. The role is defined by ownership of judgment, voice, and the rules the tools follow, not by writing code.

The full guide to the role

GTM engineer

A GTM engineer builds and automates the systems a company uses to find and win customers, usually across sales and revenue operations. The role sits closer to pipeline and outbound than to brand and content.

Marketing engineer vs GTM engineer

Founder-led marketing

Founder-led marketing is a strategy where the founder's own voice, story, and point of view carry the company's marketing, usually through personal channels like LinkedIn. It works because buyers trust people before they trust logos.

Human in the loop

Human in the loop is a working pattern where a person reviews and approves AI output before it ships. In marketing it is the difference between publishing a draft and publishing a liability.

Marketing generalist

A marketing generalist is a marketer who works across channels and functions rather than specializing in one. AI tooling favors generalists because it compresses the execution gap that once required a specialist per channel.

AI fundamentals

Large language model (LLM)

A large language model is an AI system trained on huge volumes of text to predict and generate language. LLMs power the writing, research, and reasoning tools a marketing engineer works with daily.

Prompt engineering

Prompt engineering is the practice of writing instructions that get reliable, on-brief output from an AI model. In practice it means specifying audience, voice, format, and constraints instead of hoping the model guesses them.

System prompt

A system prompt is the standing instruction set an AI model receives before any task, defining its role, rules, and voice. Marketing engineers use system prompts to encode brand guidelines once instead of repeating them per request.

Context window

The context window is the amount of text an AI model can consider at once, covering both your input and its output. Work that exceeds it gets truncated or forgotten, which is why long projects are broken into steps.

Hallucination

A hallucination is a confident but false statement produced by an AI model, such as an invented statistic or citation. Catching hallucinations before publish is a core part of the review gate.

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)

Retrieval-augmented generation is a technique where an AI model pulls from a specific document store before answering, instead of relying only on its training data. It grounds output in your actual product docs, research, or knowledge base.

AI agent

An AI agent is an AI system that works toward a goal across multiple steps and tools on its own, rather than answering a single prompt. A research agent that gathers sources, reads them, and drafts a brief is one example.

Agent orchestration

Agent orchestration is the design of how multiple AI agents and tools hand work to each other to complete a larger job. The marketing engineer decides the steps, the checkpoints, and where a human reviews.

Evals

Evals are repeatable checks that score AI output against a standard, such as a banned-word list, a voice rubric, or a factual spot check. They turn 'this feels off' into a gate the pipeline runs every time.

Automation and tooling

Workflow automation

Workflow automation is connecting tools so a multi-step process runs without manual handoffs, such as a form response triggering research, a draft, and a Slack notification. It is the plumbing of the marketing engineer's job.

No-code automation

No-code automation is building automated workflows through visual tools instead of writing software. It is usually the fastest on-ramp for marketers who want systems without an engineering background.

API

An API is the interface a piece of software exposes so other software can use it, such as pulling analytics data or sending an email programmatically. API literacy means knowing what is possible to connect, not writing the connection from scratch.

Webhook

A webhook is a message one tool sends to another the moment an event happens, like a new signup or a submitted form. Webhooks are what make automations react in real time instead of on a schedule.

Content pipeline

A content pipeline is the repeatable path a piece of content travels from idea to publish: research, draft, review, publish, distribute. Designing the pipeline once, then running it weekly, is the core move of marketing engineering.

Discoverability

SEO

Search engine optimization is the practice of earning visibility in search results through relevance, authority, and technical health. It remains the base layer that answer engines and AI assistants build on.

AEO

Answer engine optimization is structuring content so an engine can lift a passage as the direct answer to a question. In practice: question-shaped headings, an answer in the first sentence beneath them, and clean structured data.

GEO

Generative engine optimization is structuring your content and wider presence so AI assistants cite you when they write an answer. It operates on your brand as an entity, not just a single page.

Structured data

Structured data is machine-readable markup, usually schema.org JSON-LD, that tells search and answer engines what a page contains: an article, a FAQ, a how-to, a defined term. It is how a page becomes citable rather than just readable.

llms.txt

llms.txt is a plain-text file a site publishes to tell AI systems what the site is about and where its key content lives, similar in spirit to robots.txt. This site publishes one and regenerates it on every build.

Craft and quality

Brand voice guide

A brand voice guide is the document that defines how a company sounds: tone, vocabulary, banned patterns, and examples. For AI-assisted content it has to be written as executable rules a model can follow, not adjectives a human interprets.

Why your brand voice doc isn't working for AI

Review gate

A review gate is a defined checkpoint where a human judges AI output against standards before it moves forward. Strong pipelines have few gates in the right places rather than a person hovering over every step.

Vocabulary is
step zero.

Knowing the words is the cheap part. The role itself is defined in the marketing engineer guide, the abilities behind the vocabulary are mapped in the skill set, and the 90-day career path turns both into practice.
